What is "Virtual Commentary" in cricket? how it could be used in IPL 2020 in UAE?
There is a great news for cricket
fans as the 13th edition of the Indian Premier league will be organized
in United Arab Emirates! as confirmed by the BCCI. When there is a lot of increasing crisis day
by day in various things, the cricket too has suffered of late during this
pandemic. The 2020 edition of the IPL was originally decided to be played from 29th
March 2020 in India, but was forced to be postponed indefinitely due to worldwide Covid-19
outbreak.
Now since BCCI gave the final confirmation of this year’s IPL schedule, along with players, broadcasters and sponsors too have started their preparations. So, when everybody is preparing, the commentators should also be prepared. Because, the commentary is something which adds more colors to this beautiful game. The on-ground commentary is being practiced in the ongoing Test series between England and West Indies in England. When we think about the IPL it looks like there is a little chance of the commentators being physically available on the ground and covering the matches. There will be a lot of crew members, a lot of digital presenters and what not. So, keeping in mind the current situations, it (Ground Commentary) is not advisable however in UAE during the IPL 2020.
What is the alternative for the ground commentary?
Recently, a 3TC
solidarity cup was played between 3 teams in South Africa. This was a 36-over match
played between 3 teams over two halves. Irfan Pathan, Deep Dasgupta and Sanjay
Manjrekar did commentary from their homes. This is called virtual commentary
where the commentator need not to be on the field, thanks to modern technologies.
In this match, not only the commentators, but other crew members for digital
broadcasting including director also logged in from their homes.
“This was a unique experience though we were worried at times due to the fluctuating speed of the internet which could affect the voice quality. During the live game, anything can happen anytime, and you never have the full control of the technology, but Star did a wonderful job.” – Irfan Pathan speaking about his experience in recently concluded Solidarity Cup in South Africa.
Moreover, being in the stadium
and commentating is much more different than being at home, as told by Irfan
Pathan. When commentators are together in commentary box sitting next to each
other, they can understand the expressions of each other to analyse more deeply. While being at
home and commentating, it is very difficult to have that chemistry. So, it is
true that technology has taken the world to a next level and it will not be
surprising if this virtual commentary becomes a new normal in future.
When the commentators are at
their home, they could see everything which they would see from the ground with
as many as 25 camera angles at their disposal, they can even see more things than actually they would see from the ground. But, afterall, it is important to
be on the ground.
The speculations are there, many
predictions are being made, the preparations already kick-started. Nevertheless,
fans will enjoy this IPL as the fast-paced cricket is returning after a long halt.
Hence, these features of virtual commentary are very good and could be used
during the forthcoming IPL 2020 in UAE, but all we can do now is to wait and
watch, only the time will tell. IPL is scheduled to start from September 19, 2020 and the Final match will be played on November 8, 2020.
Thanks
RAHUL
